Paranormal
Year Composed: 2021
Instrumentation: Concert Band
Grade Level: 4.5
Duration: 5 minutes
Program Notes: The year 2021 was anything but normal. The prefix “Para” means above and beyond. During the Covid-19 Pandemic, I witnessed students going “above and beyond,” adapting to many new social situations and learning environments with grace and humility.
This piece was commissioned in 2021 by Kaukauna High School in Kaukauna, Wisconsin, under the direction of Jacob Martin. As part of the commissioning project, I worked with students to gather inspiration for the piece. After some discussion, they settled on the idea of their mascot, the galloping ghosts. The name may have originated from an article in a local paper, predicting a Kaukauna football team win based on the fact that Kaukauna was lighter and would trample the other team with their speed. The game was played on Halloween, with Kaukauna, dressed in white uniforms, looking like a large group of ghosts as they galloped over the opposition.
Paranormal encapsulates the mentality of determination and perseverance needed to overcome obstacles and emerge victorious over any adversary.
